HISTORY OF CITY

From the middle of the 7th century BC residents from the nearby island of Thassos and from the south of the Aegean Sea, from the island of Paros, settled in Kavala and established a colony, calling it Neapoli, with the main purpose to control the trade and to develop the gold-bearing activities in the mountain of Paggeio. Due to its privileged position and trading port, Neapoli became a tasty morsel for many conquerors and did not go unnoticed by Athens itself, which was interested in the development of Neapoli because of its important strategic location.
